La Antigua, Guatemala

Originally known as Santiago de los Caballeros was founded on March 10th 1543, only 51 years after Columbus first landed on the shores of America. La Antigua was the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala from 1543 through 1773. As such for 250 years, the city flourished as one of the predominant cultural centers in all America with some of the finest writers, sculptors, painters and architects of the time. The University of San Carlos was founded in 1678 in La Antigua and thus became the third University founded in the New World. The magic of this rich past is seen today on every street of the city with its well preserved 17th century colonial architecture.
