(A local doctor who assisted the medical team in Guatemala sends his thanks in a letter to volunteer surgeon Dr. Gerry O’Daniel)
“Since I didn’t have a chance to say good-bye to you personally I am writing to you this letter. I want you to know that the work you did with my people here in Guatemala was wonderful. It is amazing to me to know that you did take time from your vacations to come here and help the patients that we (Guatemalan doctors) should be caring for, thank you for that...
I really admire your work with the children here. Every time I see the results of your surgeries on the cleft lips and palates, I realize that you didn’t just change the children’s mouth and face, you changed their lives. Before they were defective and ugly and now they are normal like the other children. I do have a lot of respect for people like you who are
powerful with their skills and their intelligence and still they treat others like equals.
I wish you and your family the very best, and I hope to see you again sometime.
